On 9 October the criminal court in Angoulême ordered the Jenssen cognac house (Bonneuil) to pay a fine of 3,000 euros for fraud and misleading advertizing. Jenssen was unable to prove the year of origin.

Cognac on the rails

The opening of the goods rail transport link (two complete trains of 30 containercars destined for Asia) between Cognac and Le Havre will “save” 150 trucks on the road and 150,000 tons of CO2 each year. The trains transport mainly spirits to Le Havre and timber for cooperages along with other goods on the return journey. A third weekly round trip will start in early 2008.

Pineau is suffering from the “omnipotence” of cognac in the region. 93,000 hectoliters were produced in 2006. Every year, almost 10% of grape production in the Charente and Charente-Maritime goes to the grape juice market, about 800,000 to 1 million hectolitres.

Cognac : little change in turnover

In twenty years, turnover in the winegrowing sector has hardly changed. It stood at 489.8 million euros for the period 2003-2006 (in 1986-1987 : 489.4 million). Winegrowers hope to obtain a significant revaluation in contracts from this year onwards. In 1995 there were over 10,000 winegrowers in the cognac designated area. Today there are 5,630. The price of a hectare of vines in the Grande Champagne area can reach 23,000 euros.

Cognac achieved sales worth 1.5 billion euros in 2006 (159.4 million bottles shipped worldwide over 12 months, with increases in sales of +71.4% in China and +38.9% in Russia). However, the current harvest is giving low yields. SO is focusing on the growth of cognac while CL features the tasting committee at Hennessy.
